The Inflatable Cooling Tower

Overview

When Cape Town's aging Athlone power station cooling towers were eventually demolished, the last thing the city's residents wanted was to see more cooling towers erected in their place. Because they were widely regarded as an eyesore sandwiched between residential suburbs, especially with the natural beauty of Cape Town as a backdrop, we wanted Capetonians to never forget what they represented; an unsustainable future. So with the demolition fresh in consumers' minds, we designed a 10 m tall portable, inflatable replica of a cooling tower, which could be easily popped up all around Cape Town; in-between homes and buildings, playgrounds and places of pristine beauty. Inside the inflatable cooling tower, Capetonians were presented with a manned information booth, interactive display panels, and printed collateral all delivering practical tips on how to save electricity.

When our campaign was over, in the spirit of sustainability, we persuaded the City of Cape Town to donate the inflatable cooling tower to Greenpeace, who now uses it around the world in a similar way; to raise awareness, change behaviour and reduce consumers' dependence on electricity from coal power.
